Type of data stored, purpose and legal basis, deletion periods

 Purpose of data retention and retention period

We may retain your personal data for as long as it is necessary to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected, or as required or permitted by applicable laws. We will cease to retain your personal data, or block the data, as soon as it is reasonable to assume that such retention no longer serves the purpose for which the personal data was collected, and is no longer necessary for legal or business purposes. In case of blocking, your personal data will be deleted if there are no conflicting legal or contractual record retention periods to be observed, your legitimate interests do not demand further retention, or a deletion represents a disproportional effort.

Handling of personal data

Personal data is information that can be used to determine a natural person, i.e. information that identifies persons. This includes in particular names, e-mail addresses, matriculation numbers or telephone numbers. But also data about preferences, hobbies, memberships or information about websites that have been visited are personal data.

Personal data will only be collected, used and disclosed by us if legally permitted or if the user has consented to the data collection.

The use of personal data of students for the purpose of study is based largely on the applicable Hessian Higher Education Act in conjunction with the applicable Enrolment Ordinance of the State of Hessen and thus refer to EU GDPR Article 6 Paragraph 1 c).

The data of the employees of the Goethe-University collected and processed for the purposes of personnel administration, teaching, research and examination activities are based on the Hessian Higher Education Act, the Enrolment Ordinance of the State of Hesse, TV-GU, civil service law and personnel law regulations.

Access data / server log files

When accessing the pages of this web server, the following data is generally stored in the server log files:

  • URL of the visited page
  • Date and time
  • Source from where you have accessed the website
  • Amount of data sent
  • Type of client browser
  • Type of operating system
  • IP address

These data are for the sole purpose of checking the functionality, safety and security troubleshooting. This use is based on EU DSGVO Article 6 paragraph 1 f). The legal basis is also the IuK-Nutzungsordnung of Goethe University. All log files will be automatically deleted after 7 days at the latest.

In case of a legitimate interest of Goethe University, a legitimate interest of third party, or a statutory provision, a preservation of evidence can make extended retention or transfer of data to third parties possible.


When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here:

After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

When you write a comment, this comment will be stored indefinitely, including meta data. Thus, response comments can be identified and approved automatically, instead of locking them in an editing queue.

On some pages of this website, content from third party websites (e.g. YouTube videos, maps from Google Maps, RSS-Feeds, pictures etc.) can be embedded. Therefore, third party websites need to provide their IP addresses. Otherwise, their content cannot be embedded in this website.
